DPWH Provides P700M For Countrywide Rainwater Collection Project

With the onset of the rainy season and the impending La Niña, DPWH has programmed P700M for the nationwide implementation of the Rainwater Collection System.

Vivian Tan, DPWH-6 information officer, said DPW is stepping up efforts in implementing water-influenced infrastructure projects for the region, including installation of rainwater collection systems.
DPWH Regional Director, Wenceslao Leaño said the implementation of the RWCS is in compliance with RA 6716, an act providing for the construction of water wells, rainwater collectors, development of springs and rehabilitation of existing water wells in several barangays.

The amount of P37.4-M is allocated for Western Visayas for the construction of 187 rainwater collectors and rehabilitation of water supply, septage and sewerage.

According to DPWH specifications, the design of the RWCs should conform to the prototypes as prescribed by DPWH such as reinforced ground storage tank, with capacity of 4,000 liters of water, reinforced steel ground storage tank with 4,000 liters of capacity, and plastic container tank and concrete storage tank with a capacity of 6, liters.

DPWH said that preferably, the RWCs shall be installed within the premises of public markets and public elementary schools.

“The premises must have no existing water supply or the source of water shall be limited to scarce,” Tan said.

The project, Tan said, is being monitored by the USAID as partner agency.

The project aims to satisfy the ever increasing demand for water supply and the rainwater harvested can also be used for several agricultural and environmental purposes.
